It’s lovely to receive a treat and this certainly was… a unique Italian inspired afternoon tea!
I was invited to trial out this fabulous English tradition with an Italian twist at Bean Around BE.AR. Cathedral Square. They’ve turned this English delight into an Italian dream with focaccia, panzerotti, minion cakes and arancini.
So let the 3 tiers begin with savoury:
Panzerotti come in a range of shapes and sizes, these are soft and sweet with a filling of mozarella & mushroom, a bit like a deep fried savoury doughnut. Something really different and very tasty.
Arancini ball… normally cone-shaped, these mini balls are fried rice filled balls encasing melted mozarella. Wonderful little bites.
Focaccia fingers, something we are all familiar with. These are triangle fingers if stracchino (cheese) & rocket as well as prosciutto cotto (ham) & mozzarella. A lovely alternative to finger sandwiches which are made in store.
Our second tier are the traditional scones, no italianism here can win these little beauties over… served up with clotted cream and strawberry jam. The only problem was which to put on first??? So I opted for both! One cream then jam, and the other jam then cream. The difference? None to tasting, but easier to spread the cream on the top rather than the jam on the cream. They are large, fruit laced and very filling.
Straight up to the third tier then with a selection of minions (mini cakes) here is one of Italy’s favourites: the ‘cannolo’ created from Sicily, these are ricotta filled pastry dough tubes dipped with pistacchio one end and an orange rind slither, the other. A crunchy, creamy bite of sweetness, made by the owner. The ‘aragostino’ is the lobster tail shaped mini cakes. Very flaky pastry filled with Nutella. Again a crunchy sweet delicacy. Sometimes these come with lemon or pistacchio filling. On this top tier are then two more mini cakes of the ranges in store which may be different each sitting. I had a round raspberry cream tart and a hazelnut tipped trumpet filled with wonderful Italian vanilla cream custard…it just has to be tried.
Along with this was my choice of hot drink so I opted for a creamy cappuccino.
